my relationship to tarot: questions + desire
In the summer of 2019, I was experiencing a life rupture. Everything that I thought my life was going to look like was dissolving, and I felt simultaneously devastated + in the midst of a profound transformation. From this place, I would say I was going through a “Tower” moment.
Inspired by adrienne maree brown, I began pulling a tarot card each day. I remembered that I’d received the Motherpeace tarot deck 18 months before on my ordination day, but had never opened it. I soon gave that deck away to a friend and began working with Kim Krans’s Wild Unknown Tarot. Eventually, I remembered the Smith Rider Waite deck that my mother kept in her middle dresser drawer when I was growing up…memories of The Hanged Man + the 7 of Swords—intriguing images of strangeness.
One particularly devastating day that summer, I walked up to my a-frame cabin, sobbing + disconsolate, + pulled three cards: 10 of Swords, XII The Hanged Man, 7 of Swords. Seemingly alone in my agony, when I pulled these cards, I had the direct + profound experience of feeling seen by larger forces. This was, as a friend of mine has termed such things, a “shift gift.” My deep study commenced + continues.
My tarot practice can’t help but be informed by fifteen years of training in a monastic Zen Buddhist Order—ten of those years in full-time residential training, four of those as a monastic. My current tarot practice is deeply shaped by my spiritual devotion to the land that I live on + the dead, as well as my organizing work with Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ).
Working, playing, creating + imagining with the tarot is a daily, personal, + expansive practice for me. I believe the seventy-eight arcana, or mysteries, of the tarot provide a richly textured tapestry of teachings on the human experience, + because they are based in powerful archetypes, their teachings are as important + relevant now as they have ever been.
My study + practice includes the specific + personal, as well as taking into account the pervasive + inescapable influence that sociopolitical, economic + cultural systems of oppression have on our capacity to embody our full humanity. I have deep faith—through experience—in the tarot’s power to help us imagine—individually + collectively—a different world.
The tarot sessions I do emphasize the importance of your question + this is something that we discuss + refine together. Because your question or request is what the oracle is responding to, landing on a question that really matters + matches what you most deeply want to know makes for a powerful + resonant reading.
