Card of the Day: Daughter of Cups

Yes, sometimes it’s like this. A card follows you around, asking: What else? What more?
I’m including images of this card (also known as the Page or Lady of Cups) from other decks as well, because when a card appears repeatedly, I feel like it’s calling for examination from all angles. Other tarot practitioners’ and artists’ visual expression of a card’s meaning deepens and expands my own understanding.
I’ve been having a lot of conversations lately with friends about attention. Living in the world again as a lay practitioner, the opportunities for really solid distraction abound. And not just distraction—there are so many books, films, art, things to study and explore. It’s easy to get lost. I find I have to work every day to put my time, energy, and attention toward what’s most important to me. Knowing what that means for me is step one. Touching in with my values and intentions every day through liturgy is step two. Exercising discernment has to happen all day long. Whose stories do I want to pay attention to? How do I want to feel at the end of day? What’s the right mix of staying informed, or being inspired by others’ work versus attending to my own intuitions, longings, creative expression and actions?
I had the thought to use this card and the space I have here today to shout out some artists, activists, and tarot practitioners whose work has been inspiring me lately.
