Card of the Day: Ace of Swords

Ace of Swords from the Spolia Tarot

A single sword is an extremely useful, multi-purpose tool. It can protect, defend, cut away what is inhibiting growth and clarity. In this gorgeous depiction from @spoliatarot, keen-eyed birds of prey act as messengers of truth, wisdom and justice. This card calls on us to know at the bone marrow-level what our values are. What do we organize our life-force around?

There is so much happening in the world, and in my own little corner of it, that it’s been easy for me to get lost in internet/news wormholes and other things that scatter my mind or causes paralysis. This card showed up this morning as a gift and a messenger reminding me to keep it simple, focus on the things I’ve made commitments to, and remember that my mind is a precious, powerful resource.

I have had so many conversations in the past two weeks about white supremacy, undoing racism, white fragility. Friends and community members burning with questions, confusion, guilt, shame, inspiration, ideas. The information and learning are coming fast; so much is at stake in this moment. We are on a tipping point of true, structural change, and that includes changing our inner landscapes, maps and orientations. Things we might have thought were “normal” and okay are being exposed for what they are: unjust, violent and systemically oppressive.

The origins of the word “apocalypse” mean unveiling, or uncovering. That is what we’re living through. The thing that so many have seen for so long is finally being revealed on a mass scale. And part of what is being revealed is the beauty and power of the Movement for Black Lives—the wisdom, the clarity, the insight, the creativity and powerful communication. It’s a real Ace of Swords moment.

If you haven’t checked out the M4BL’s Call to Action for this upcoming Juneteenth weekend (link in bio), I encourage you to. And look up Juneteenth—a sacred day. There is a Black-led, multiracial global movement that is all about creating a world that I want to live in—centered on the thriving and dignity of Black Lives, anti-capitalist: YES. What kind of world do you want to live in?
