Card of the Day: Two of Roots (Pentacles)

I am thrilled to be diving into the Earth element and the suit of Pentacles (or here, in The Brady Tarot, Roots) at the start of Sarah Faith Gottesdiener’s Elemental Intuition course. It feels like I’m getting to know this suit for the first time, again. Part of why I chose this card today is touching in with its astrological correspondence—Jupiter in Capricorn. This has been a major factor in my chart for the past year + more, and it helps me understand why this card brings me such joy.

In traditional depictions, a figure is literally juggling, with ships riding swelling waves in the background. As Joan Bunning puts it, it’s the feeling of being both graceful and effective at the same time. As someone with Sun, Moon and Mercury in Capricorn, I have no problem being effective (or “efficient,” actually). But to be able to do that gracefully, playfully, well, it’s a peak experience for me. Jupiter’s spaciousness, playfulness, trust and abundance are the perfect sidekick to Capricorn’s structure, boundaries, discipline and practicality. This card represents a living sweet spot for me.

After a decade in the Monastery where the schedule dictated every aspect of daily life, I now have a life that I get to create each day. I do many different kinds of work to support myself financially and spiritually, and I have the privilege and good fortune of centering that work around my deepest values—love, justice, healing, creativity and liberation.

This card reminds me to be open to discovering ever more deeply how my interests, gifts and experience can inform my work. It asks me to see how I can creatively braid together the seemingly different strands of my life—spiritual practice, tarot, art practice, uprooting white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism—into an integrated whole, where each part speaks to and feeds the other parts. Being invited to make conscious contact with the blessings and support of the Earth element makes all of this feel so deeply fulfilling.
