In the first line of the Major Arcana, we (The Fool) come equipped with an ability to act in our world (The Magician), notice and explore our inner life (The HIgh Priestess), learn about nourishment and structure from our caregivers (The Empress & The Emperor), and receive instruction and indoctrination through the culture (The Hierophant). The Lovers represent the way we begin to make our own choices—who we love, what we love, how we love. What’s important to us. What we move toward and who we do that with.

Jessica Dore (via Joseph Campbell) talks about The Lovers in terms of “relationships as spiritual exercise.” I’m learning fast that different of my loved ones need different things right now. And that, being in my own space with what’s happening, I am sometimes mis-attuned. My worst fear, other than losing my own life or my loved ones? Turning on each other.

I pulled a big scary spread this morning for myself. Lots of swords and heartbreak. A reminder to take care of my mind, and also to feel, to acknowledge the shadows. It’s really hard for me to do that on a good day. I’m feeling pinned to my comfy chair this morning, mind swirling with fear and shame. Letting it be there for now.

In a couple hours, I’ll shift gears and go to work at the library. I’ll work with my beautiful co-workers to keep the library clean and sanitized, I’ll wash my hands liturgically, I’ll do my best to offer love and ease and space to those who venture in for a book, or a conversation. I’ll run an errand for a friend who’s not feeling well and come home and check in with loved ones by text and email. And I’ll do some things that make me feel settled.

Wishing in gladness and in safety: May all beings be at ease.
