When we’re in the basement of our life, mucking around in the old dusty boxes, not even quite sure what we’re looking for, we become vulnerable to all sorts of things. (I remember helping someone clean out a house and going down with pneumonia for ten days afterwards.) This vulnerability can manifest in many ways—literal, emotional, metaphorical, symbolic. The wands are our spirit, our life force, our fire, our identity and creativity, and the nines signal nearing the end of a cycle. Now is not the time to turn back.
The Nine of Wands calls on us to draw on our deep reserves of strength, discipline and confidence to find our way out. Many, many things and people and situations will vie for our attention, our precious energy. Finding out what we need to care for and nourish ourselves, what activities and relationships give us strength for the final stretch. Learning—maybe messily, maybe for the first time—how to say “No,” how to set boundaries so that we can do the work we need to do can help us conserve our energy for what needs to be done.
Light awaits us at the end of this final stretch. And so does the mysterious crescent moon. Is she waxing? Or waning? What else is waiting for us? There’s only one way to find out. One step at a time.
